Maple’s New Collar

Nichole and I follow Lone Star Dog Ranch (LSDR) on Facebook.  Located in Anna, Texas, LSDR is a dog boarding and daycare facility. More importantly, they also run an effective dog rescue service that seeks to transition mill dogs into loving homes. We’re inspired by the work they do and we’re hoping to adopt a rescued french bulldog from them sometime in the near future.

Each of the dogs they rescue receives a beautiful new collar. These collars are not your ordinary collars – they are heavy duty with thick leather, rivets, crystals, conchos, and nice big metal buckles. Seeing how great these collars looked on their rescued frenchies, I set out to make one for our french bulldog, Maple. After digging around on the interwebs, I stumbled upon an excellent resource from Make:, a website offering resources and information on a variety of topics for DIY’ers. The article, “How-To: Leather Dog Collar,” by Goli Mohammad, is a great introduction to crafting leather dog collars and it even includes a downloadable template.

Below are some pictures of the collar I made for Maple. It looks awesome, and I’m impressed considering it was my first dog collar. The jury is still out as to whether Maple likes it! I’m convinced, if given the opportunity, she would happily use it for a chew toy.

If you’re interested in making your own collar, check out the article mentioned above and get started. I got all of my supplies for the project at Springfield Leather, which by and far has some of the best customer service I’ve encountered in any company in a very long time!
